Hazrat Jilani Miya R.H, honored with the title "Mufassir-e-Azam" (the Greatest Commentator of the Quran), was a distinguished scholar of Bareilly Shareef and a member of the illustrious Khandaan-e-Raza — the blessed scholarly dynasty of Aala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan R.H. His name "Jilani" connects him spiritually to Hazrat Ghous-e-Azam Abdul Qadir al-Jilani R.H of Baghdad, reflecting the family's deep Qadiri spiritual heritage alongside their scholarly eminence. He received his education within the family tradition of Bareilly Shareef — studying under the senior scholars of the household — and specialized in Tafsir (Quranic exegesis), mastering the classical commentaries including Tafsir al-Kabir, Tafsir al-Jalalayn, Tafsir Ruh al-Ma'ani, and Tafsir Khazin.
The title "Mufassir-e-Azam" was conferred upon him by the Ulama in recognition of his unmatched ability to explain the meanings of the Holy Quran — he could illuminate the most complex verses with such clarity that both scholars and common people would benefit equally from his explanations. He was particularly renowned for his Dars-e-Quran (Quran lectures) which would draw large audiences in Bareilly — he would explain each verse with reference to its context of revelation (Shan-e-Nuzul), grammatical analysis, legal implications, and spiritual meanings, presenting a complete picture of divine guidance. He authored scholarly works on Tafsir that continue to be studied in Sunni madrasas, and his explanations of difficult Quranic passages are cited by subsequent scholars as authoritative references.
He maintained the family tradition of deep love for the Prophet ﷺ, and his Tafsir lectures would become especially emotional when explaining verses related to the Prophet's ﷺ status, miracles, and the obligation of loving him. His annual Urs on the 11th of Safar is observed in Bareilly Shareef with scholarly gatherings featuring Dars-e-Quran sessions, Fatiha, and Naat recitals honoring this great interpreter of Allah's Word.
