Hazrat Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib R.A, the paternal uncle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was martyred at the Battle of Uhud on the 15th of Shawwal, 3 AH (625 CE). He was given the title "Sayyid al-Shuhada" (Chief of the Martyrs) by the Prophet ﷺ himself — the highest honor bestowed upon any martyr in Islam. He was approximately two years older than the Prophet ﷺ and had been his foster-brother through breastfeeding, creating a bond even deeper than that of uncle and nephew.
His acceptance of Islam in the 6th year of Prophethood was a turning point for the early Muslim community — he was one of the strongest and most feared warriors of Quraysh, and his conversion gave the Muslims strength, protection, and dignity. He accepted Islam in a moment of righteous anger after witnessing Abu Jahl insult the Prophet ﷺ — he struck Abu Jahl with his bow and declared: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger." At the Battle of Badr, he fought with extraordinary valor, killing many of the leading enemies of Islam including Utbah ibn Rabi'ah and Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah in single combat — two of the most powerful Qurayshi chiefs. At Uhud, he again displayed unmatched courage, fighting like a lion and killing over 30 of the enemy before being martyred by Wahshi ibn Harb, an Abyssinian slave who had been promised freedom by Hind bint Utbah if he killed Hamza R.A.
After his martyrdom, Hind mutilated his body in a horrific act of revenge for her father Utbah's death at Badr — cutting open his chest and attempting to chew his liver. When the Prophet ﷺ saw the state of his beloved uncle's body, he wept profoundly and said: "I shall never be struck by a calamity greater than this." He vowed to mutilate 70 of the enemy in retaliation, but Allah revealed: "And if you punish, punish with the equivalent of that with which you were harmed." (16:126) — and the Prophet ﷺ forgave and exercised patience. He is buried at the foot of Mount Uhud in Madinah, where his grave is visited by millions of pilgrims every year who honor the Chief of Martyrs.
