Hazrat Khawaja Data R.H was a revered Sufi saint of Surat, Gujarat — one of India's oldest and most prosperous port cities, which served as the primary gateway for Hajj pilgrims traveling by sea to Makkah and was a major center of Islamic commerce and scholarship on the western coast since the medieval period. His title "Khawaja" connects him to the Chishti spiritual tradition, while "Data" (Giver/Bestower) indicates his legendary generosity — he was known for giving away everything he possessed to those in need, living in voluntary poverty while ensuring others were fed and clothed. He played a significant role in the spiritual life of Gujarat's Muslim trading community — the merchants of Surat, known for their wealth from international trade with Arabia, Persia, and East Africa, would seek his blessings before voyages and his counsel on matters of Halal commerce.

Among his karamaat, it is narrated that a ship carrying Muslim traders from Surat was caught in a violent storm in the Arabian Sea. The merchants collectively called upon his name — the storm subsided immediately and the ship reached its destination safely. The grateful merchants donated a portion of their profits to his langar.

Another narration states that during a fire that threatened the textile warehouses of Surat (the city was famous for its silk and brocade trade), he stood at the edge of the blaze reciting prayers — the fire changed direction away from the warehouses, saving the livelihoods of hundreds of families. His khanqah in Surat served as both a spiritual center and a waystation for Hajj pilgrims who would stop to seek his blessings and prayers for a safe sea journey before boarding ships at Surat's famous port. He was known for his emphasis on honest trade — teaching that wealth earned through Halal means is a blessing, but wealth earned through deception is a curse that destroys both worldly and spiritual life.

His shrine in Surat remains a place of great spiritual significance for the Muslim community of Gujarat. His annual Urs is observed with Quran Khwani, Fatiha, Naat recitals, and langar distribution honoring his legacy of generosity.
