Hazrat Khawaja Mahboob Ullah R.H was a distinguished Sufi saint of Hyderabad, Deccan — the city of the Charminar, Mecca Masjid, and the Nizams, which served as one of the greatest centers of Islamic culture, scholarship, and Sufi spirituality in all of South India for over four centuries under the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi dynasties. His name "Mahboob Ullah" (Beloved of Allah) was not merely a given name but a spiritual title — indicating that he had reached the station of divine love (mahabbah) where Allah SWT Himself declares His love for the servant, as mentioned in the Hadith Qudsi: "When I love him, I become his hearing, his sight, and his hand." His title "Khawaja" connects him to the Chishti spiritual tradition — the order that has been the dominant Sufi influence in the Deccan since Hazrat Banda Nawaz Gesu Daraz R.H established it in Gulbarga in the 14th century. He lived during the era of the Nizams of Hyderabad — when the city was home to world-class institutions, magnificent mosques like the Mecca Masjid (built to hold 10,000 worshippers), and a thriving culture of Urdu poetry, Sufi music, and Islamic scholarship that made it the cultural capital of Muslim India.
Among his karamaat, it is narrated that a nobleman of the Nizam's court who had lost his position and was facing financial ruin came to him in despair. Hazrat Mahboob Ullah R.H told him to recite Ya Razzaq (O Provider) 1,000 times daily for 40 days — before the 40 days were complete, the nobleman was reinstated to an even higher position than before. Another narration states that during a severe drought in the Deccan, he led a special prayer gathering at his khanqah — rain fell that very evening, breaking the drought and saving the crops of the entire Telangana region.
His khanqah in Hyderabad became a gathering place for the city's diverse Muslim community — Deccani, Urdu-speaking, Arab, and Persian Muslims would sit together in his Dhikr circles, united by divine love. He was known for his practice of personally visiting the sick in Hyderabad's old city, reciting Quran over them and making dua for their recovery. His annual Urs on the 19th of Dhu al-Qi'dah is observed with Quran Khwani, Fatiha, Dhikr gatherings, and Qawwali by devotees from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh who honor this beloved of Allah.
