Hazrat Shah Alam R.H, whose full name was Syed Burhanuddin Qutb-ul-Alam, was one of the most revered Sufi saints of Gujarat, India, whose spiritual legacy is so deeply woven into the fabric of Ahmedabad that an entire historic locality — Shah Alam — along with its famous Roza (mausoleum) and surrounding area, bears his blessed name. He belonged to the Suhrawardi Sufi order and was a descendant of the noble Sayyid lineage, tracing his ancestry to the blessed household of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He lived during the era of the Gujarat Sultanate when Ahmedabad — founded in 1411 CE by Sultan Ahmed Shah — was among the wealthiest and most magnificent cities in India.

He received his spiritual training in the Suhrawardi silsila and attained the highest stations of wilayah (sainthood), becoming the Qutb (spiritual axis) of Gujarat — hence his title "Qutb-ul-Alam" (Axis of the World). Among his famous karamaat, it is narrated that Sultan Ahmed Shah himself came to seek his blessings before founding the city of Ahmedabad. The saint blessed the venture and prophesied that the city would become one of the greatest in all of Hindustan — a prophecy that was fulfilled as Ahmedabad grew into a thriving metropolis.

Another narration states that during a severe plague in the city, Hazrat Shah Alam R.H walked through the affected neighborhoods reciting prayers — wherever his blessed feet touched, the plague receded, and the people declared him the spiritual protector of Ahmedabad, a status his shrine holds to this day. He was known for his practice of feeding hundreds daily from his langar-khana (community kitchen), never turning away anyone — Hindu, Muslim, or traveler — and this tradition of universal hospitality continues at his dargah even today. His Roza (shrine) in the Shah Alam area of Ahmedabad is an architectural marvel of the Gujarat Sultanate period, featuring intricate jali (lattice) work, beautiful domes, and a serene courtyard that provides spiritual peace to all who visit.

The Shah Alam locality grew around his khanqah and became one of the largest Muslim neighborhoods in Ahmedabad, with mosques, madrasas, and markets all tracing their origins to the community that gathered around this great saint. His annual Urs on the 18th of Jumada al-Thani is one of the most significant religious gatherings in Gujarat, observed with Quran Khwani, Fatiha, Qawwali, Naat recitals, and massive langar distribution feeding thousands of devotees who come from across Gujarat and Rajasthan to honor his blessed memory.
