Hazrat Abu Yazid Tayfur ibn Isa al-Bustami R.H (804–874 CE), universally known as Bayazid Bustami, was one of the greatest and most influential Sufi masters in the entire history of Islamic mysticism. He is considered the founder of the "ecstatic" (sukr/intoxication) school of Sufism, as opposed to the "sober" (sahw) school represented by Hazrat Junaid al-Baghdadi R.H. He was born in Bustam (modern Shahroud, Iran) and spent most of his life there in intense worship, spiritual practice, and contemplation of the Divine.

He is most famous for his concept of "fana fi Allah" (annihilation in God) — the spiritual state where the mystic's individual self is completely absorbed in the awareness of the Divine, losing all sense of separate existence. His ecstatic utterances (shathiyat), spoken in states of spiritual overwhelm, became some of the most discussed and debated statements in Sufi literature. He was known for his extreme asceticism — it is said he fasted continuously for years and would spend entire nights in prayer and contemplation.

He reportedly said: "I stood with Allah for thirty years, and I found that it was He who was seeking me, not I who was seeking Him." His spiritual influence extends across all Sufi orders, and his teachings on the annihilation of the ego remain central to Islamic mystical thought. He passed away in Bustam, Iran, where his shrine remains a major pilgrimage site visited by seekers from across the Muslim world. His Wisaal on the 14th of Ramadan is commemorated with Dhikr gatherings, Fatiha, and spiritual assemblies by devotees who honor this towering figure of Islamic spirituality.
