Hazrat Imam Hussain ibn Ali R.A, the younger grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was born on the 3rd of Sha'ban, 4 AH in Madinah al-Munawwarah. He was the second son of Hazrat Ali R.A and Hazrat Fatima al-Zahra R.A — making him a member of the most blessed family in all of creation, the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ himself named him Hussain (meaning "beautiful little one"), performed the Adhan in his right ear and Iqamah in his left, performed the Aqeeqah on his behalf, and shaved his head, giving the weight of his hair in silver as charity.
The Prophet ﷺ showed immense love and affection for him throughout his life — he would carry Hussain R.A on his shoulders during prayer, extend his prostration if Hussain climbed on his back, and would kiss him frequently in public. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain. Allah loves whoever loves Hussain.
Hussain is a Sibt (grandson) from among the Asbat." (Tirmidhi). He grew up in the direct care and company of the Prophet ﷺ for the first six years of his life, absorbing the Prophetic character, manners, and spirituality firsthand. He was known for his extraordinary resemblance to the Prophet ﷺ — particularly from the chest downward — and his character mirrored the Prophetic qualities of bravery, generosity, eloquence, and unwavering commitment to truth.
He is remembered as "Sayyid al-Shuhada" (Master of Martyrs) for his supreme sacrifice at Karbala on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH, where he stood against the tyranny of Yazid with only 72 companions and family members against an army of thousands — choosing martyrdom over submission to injustice. His famous declaration at Karbala echoes through history: "Death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation." This stand preserved the true spirit of Islam and became an eternal symbol of resistance against oppression. His birth on the 3rd of Sha'ban is celebrated with great joy by Muslims worldwide, with gatherings of Naat, Dhikr, distribution of sweets, and expressions of love for the blessed grandson of the Prophet ﷺ whose sacrifice saved the soul of Islam.
