The Islamic New Year, observed on the 1st of Muharram al-Haram, marks the beginning of the Hijri (Islamic) lunar calendar — a calendar unique to the Muslim world. The Hijri calendar takes its name from the Hijra — the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah al-Mukarramah to Madinah al-Munawwarah in 622 CE — which is the defining event from which Islamic history is dated. Before this migration, Muslims in Makkah had endured 13 years of severe persecution at the hands of the Quraysh, including economic boycotts, physical torture of early converts, and social ostracism.

The Hijra was not merely a physical journey but a profound act of faith, sacrifice, and trust in Allah SWT. The Hijri calendar was formally established during the Caliphate of Hazrat Umar Farooq R.A in approximately 17 AH, when the need arose to date official documents and letters. After consultation with senior companions, Hazrat Umar R.A chose the year of the Hijra — not the birth or death of the Prophet ﷺ — as the starting point, emphasizing that the migration was the defining moment of the Islamic state.

The Islamic year is a purely lunar calendar of 354 or 355 days, consisting of 12 months that cycle through all seasons over a period of approximately 33 years. Muharram itself is one of the four sacred months (Ash-hur al-Hurum) in which warfare was traditionally prohibited in pre-Islamic Arabia and which Islam confirmed as sacred. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Muharram," highlighting the immense spiritual value of this month.

On this day, Muslims reflect on the sacrifice of the Hijra, renew their intentions for the new year, increase their worship, and remember that time is a trust from Allah SWT that must be spent in obedience and righteousness.
