Hazrat Syed Abdul Qader Shah Wali R.H was a revered Sufi saint of Nagor Shareef (Nagore, Tamil Nadu, India) and a direct descendant of Hazrat Ghous-e-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani R.H (470–561 AH) of Baghdad — the founder of the Qadiriyya, the most widespread Sufi order in the world. Nagore Shareef on the coast of Tamil Nadu has been a major center of Qadiri Sufism in South India for centuries, with the famous Nagore Dargah (Hazrat Shahul Hameed Nagori R.H) being one of the most visited shrines in the entire southern region. Hazrat Syed Abdul Qader Shah Wali R.H carried the spiritual legacy of this blessed land, maintaining the authentic Qadiri practices of Dhikr, spiritual purification, and service to humanity as transmitted through an unbroken chain from Baghdad.
He was named after his illustrious ancestor Ghous-e-Azam Abdul Qadir, and from his youth displayed the same qualities of deep piety, generosity, and spiritual authority that characterized the great saint of Baghdad. Among his karamaat, it is narrated that fishermen of the Nagore coast would seek his dua before venturing into the sea — on one occasion, a terrible storm arose and the boats were in danger of capsizing. The fishermen called out his name, and witnesses on shore saw the waves suddenly calm around their boats while the storm raged elsewhere.
He was known for his practice of distributing food to the poor every Thursday evening (Shab-e-Jumma), a tradition rooted in the Qadiri practice of honoring the night before Friday as a time of special blessings and spiritual openings. His khanqah served as a center where both Tamil and Urdu-speaking Muslims would gather for Gyarwee Shareef, Quran recitation, and Qadiri Dhikr sessions. His shrine in Nagor Shareef remains a place of deep reverence, particularly for the Muslim fishing communities of the Tamil Nadu coast who consider him their protector.
His annual Urs on the 10th of Jumada al-Thani is observed with Quran Khwani, Fatiha, Gyarwee Shareef, Dhikr gatherings, and langar distribution where devotees honor this great descendant of Ghous-e-Azam R.H and seek his spiritual blessings.
