Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib R.A (13 Rajab, 23 BH – 21 Ramadan, 40 AH / 600–661 CE), the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, was born on the 13th of Rajab inside the Holy Kaaba in Makkah — a distinction given to no other human being in all of history. His mother, Fatima bint Asad R.A, felt labor pains near the Kaaba and the wall miraculously split open for her to enter. She gave birth inside the sacred House of Allah, and the child was named Ali (the Exalted) by the Prophet ﷺ himself.
He was raised in the household of the Prophet ﷺ from the age of six — eating at his table, sleeping in his room, and absorbing his character and knowledge directly. He never prostrated to an idol in his life, earning the title "Karram Allahu Wajhahu" (May Allah honor his face). He was the first male to accept Islam at approximately age ten.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate" — making him the primary gateway to Prophetic knowledge for the entire Ummah. His titles include: Ameer-ul-Momineen (Commander of the Faithful), Asadullah (Lion of Allah), Haidar-e-Karrar (the Charging Lion), Bab-ul-Ilm (Gate of Knowledge), and Abu Turab (Father of Dust — a name the Prophet ﷺ lovingly gave him). His bravery was unmatched in Islamic history — at Badr he killed half the enemy leaders; at Uhud he defended the Prophet ﷺ when others fled; at Khandaq he killed the champion Amr ibn Abd Wudd in single combat; and at Khaybar he uprooted the massive fortress gate that 40 men together could not move.
He married Hazrat Fatima al-Zahra R.A — the most beloved daughter of the Prophet ﷺ — and from this blessed union came Hazrat Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain R.A, through whom the entire lineage of the Prophet ﷺ continues to this day. He was the scribe of Quranic revelation, the Prophet's ﷺ standard-bearer, and the one who slept in the Prophet's ﷺ bed on the night of Hijra while assassins surrounded the house — risking certain death without hesitation. His birth on the 13th of Rajab is celebrated worldwide with Milad gatherings, Dhikr, Naat recitals, and scholarly lectures on his extraordinary life and virtues.
