Hazrat Bilal ibn Rabah R.A (d. approximately 20 AH / 641 CE), the first Muezzin (caller to prayer) of Islam, was an Abyssinian (Ethiopian) slave who became one of the most honored Companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — his story is the ultimate testament that Islam judges people by their faith, not their race or social status. He was owned by Umayyah ibn Khalaf, one of the fiercest enemies of Islam in Makkah. When Bilal R.A accepted Islam as one of the earliest converts, his master subjected him to horrific torture — dragging him through the streets, placing enormous boulders on his chest under the scorching Arabian sun, and demanding he renounce his faith.
Through all this agony, Bilal R.A would only repeat: "Ahad! Ahad!" (One! One!) — affirming the Oneness of Allah with a conviction that shook even his torturers.
Hazrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq R.A purchased his freedom for a large sum, and the Prophet ﷺ appointed him as the first Muezzin of Islam — choosing his powerful, melodious voice to call the faithful to prayer. He gave the historic first Adhan from atop the Kaaba after the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH. He was the Prophet's ﷺ personal attendant, carrying his staff and water for Wudu.
He fought in all major battles — Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, and Hunayn — always at the Prophet's ﷺ side. At Badr, he personally confronted and killed his former torturer Umayyah ibn Khalaf in battle. The Prophet ﷺ said about him: "I heard the sound of your footsteps ahead of me in Paradise" — confirming his guaranteed place in Jannah.
After the Prophet's ﷺ passing, Bilal R.A was so overwhelmed with grief that he could not bring himself to give the Adhan — every time he tried, he would break down weeping at the words "Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah." He left Madinah and settled in Damascus, Syria, dedicating himself to jihad. Years later, he visited Madinah and Hazrat Hassan and Hussain R.A (the Prophet's ﷺ grandsons) begged him to give the Adhan one final time. When his voice rang out over Madinah after years of silence, the entire city — men, women, and children — poured into the streets weeping, as if the Prophet ﷺ himself had returned.
It was the most emotional moment Madinah had witnessed since the Prophet's ﷺ funeral. He passed away in Damascus and is buried in Bab al-Saghir cemetery — his grave remains a place of visitation where Muslims honor this symbol of faith over oppression.
