Hazrat Mufti Habeeb Yaar Khan R.H, honored with the title "Mufti-e-Malwah" (Grand Mufti of the Malwa Region), was the foremost religious authority of the Ahl-e-Sunnat community in Indore, Madhya Pradesh — the commercial capital of the Malwa plateau and one of central India's most dynamic cities with a significant Muslim population concentrated in areas like Khajrana, Rajwada, and Chhatripura. His name "Habeeb Yaar" (Beloved Friend) reflected his personality — he was beloved by all who knew him, and his friendship was sought by scholars and common people alike for the warmth, wisdom, and spiritual comfort he provided. He received his education at leading Sunni institutions, specializing in Hanafi Fiqh and studying the classical texts under accomplished Muftis who granted him ijazah to issue fatwas independently for the Malwa region.
The Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh — encompassing Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Ratlam, and Mandsaur — has a Muslim community with roots dating back to the Sultanate period, and Mufti Habeeb Yaar Khan R.H served as their primary religious guide for decades. He was particularly known for his expertise in resolving complex inheritance disputes (Ilm al-Faraid) — a field requiring both mathematical precision and deep knowledge of Fiqh — and families from across Madhya Pradesh would bring their cases to him. He established a Dar-ul-Ifta in Indore that addressed thousands of questions from the Muslim community on matters ranging from daily worship to modern business practices, providing clear guidance rooted in classical Hanafi methodology.
Among his contributions, he established evening Islamic classes for working adults in Indore who could not attend full-time madrasas — ensuring that even those engaged in business and employment had access to essential Islamic knowledge. He was known for his Friday sermons at the main mosque in Khajrana area that would draw large congregations — his ability to connect Fiqh rulings to daily life made his sermons both educational and spiritually uplifting. His Wisaal on the 27th of Shawwal is commemorated with Fatiha, scholarly gatherings, and Quran Khwani by the Muslim community of Indore and the wider Malwa region who honor this beloved Mufti who served them with knowledge and compassion.
