Chand Raat (the Night of the Moon) is the night when the new crescent moon is sighted, marking the end of one Islamic month and the beginning of the next. The most celebrated Chand Raat is the one marking the end of Ramadan and the arrival of Eid-ul-Fitr, when the atmosphere is filled with joy, excitement, and gratitude. Muslims celebrate by applying henna (mehndi), shopping for new clothes, preparing special foods, and spending time with family and friends.
The sighting of the new moon has deep religious significance in Islam, as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Fast when you see it (the new moon) and break your fast when you see it."
