Hazrat Yahiya Pasha R.H was a revered Sufi saint of Hyderabad, Deccan — the historic city founded by the Qutb Shahi dynasty in 1591 CE, which became one of the greatest centers of Islamic culture, learning, and Sufi spirituality in all of South India under the Nizams who ruled for over two centuries. His title "Pasha" (a high-ranking honorific of Turkish/Ottoman origin) indicates either his noble ancestry or the regal dignity of his spiritual bearing that commanded respect from all who encountered him. He lived during the golden era of Hyderabad's Islamic civilization when the city was home to world-class institutions like the Osmania University, the Salar Jung Museum, and numerous madrasas and khanqahs that made it the intellectual capital of Muslim India.
Among his karamaat, it is narrated that a family plagued by continuous misfortune came to him seeking help. He instructed them to recite Surah al-Waqiah every night after Isha for 40 days — before the 40 days were complete, their circumstances transformed dramatically and prosperity returned to their household. Another narration states that he once pointed to an empty plot of land and told his companions: "A mosque will stand here that will serve this community for centuries." Years after his passing, a mosque was indeed built on that exact spot and continues to serve the neighborhood to this day.
His khanqah in Hyderabad became a gathering place for the city's diverse Muslim community — Deccani, Urdu-speaking, Arab, and Turkish Muslims would all sit together in his company, united by their love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. He was known for his practice of reciting the entire Quran every Friday (Jumu'ah) and distributing food to the poor after every Jumu'ah prayer without exception. His shrine in Hyderabad remains a place of great reverence in the Deccan, visited by devotees who seek blessings amidst the city's rich Islamic heritage.
His annual Urs on the 4th of Safar is observed with Quran Khwani, Fatiha, Naat recitals, and Dhikr gatherings by the Muslim community of Hyderabad.
