Eid-ul-Fitr (the Festival of Breaking the Fast) is one of the two great annual celebrations of Islam, observed on the 1st of Shawwal upon the sighting of the new crescent moon that marks the end of the blessed month of Ramadan. The Eid of Fitr was established by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. When he arrived in Madinah, he found the people celebrating two days of festivity from pre-Islamic times.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has replaced those two days with something better: the day of Fitr and the day of Adha." (Abu Dawud). Before the Eid prayer, every Muslim must give Sadaqat al-Fitr to the poor, so that even the poorest members of the community may celebrate Eid with joy. On this day, Muslims wear their finest clothes, apply perfume, eat something sweet before the prayer — following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ — visit family and friends, exchange gifts, and greet each other with "Eid Mubarak." It is a day of genuine spiritual gratitude to Allah SWT for granting the ability to complete the sacred month of fasting, prayers, and Quran recitation.
